TankerTime 2018, always FREE
6/14/18 Eid mubarak! TankerTime is closed today from 10am to 2pm as staff are out celebrating Eid, celebrating their anniversary, on vacation, sick or at a planning meeting. As compensation, TankerTime will run late today until 10pm. Here's a note left on our new ArtTable on deck after a family had pizza dinner there the other night.
Daytime: TankerTime M-F 10am to 6pm and often later. Weekend days often. Volunteer so we can expand weekend hours.
Nightime: Second Sundays TankerTime, 5pm to midnight, May thru September. Around 10 pm, jam of Mediterranean music starts
Where: ship MARY WHALEN, Pier 11, Atlantic Basin, Red Hook, Brooklyn. The NYC ferry stop for Red Hook is right next to us.
Enjoy the main deck of PortSide's historic ship, the tanker MARY A. WHALEN. Hammocks! Books to read! Toys for little kids! ArtTable with drawing & painting supplies to use. Watch boats, ducks and geese come and go. Chill. Beat the rat race. Have your meeting here.
Pro tip: wait for the NYC Ferry here! When you see the ferry enter Atlantic Basin, you have enough time to walk over to dock and get the boat.
See how we bring cultures together during Second Sundays TankerTime in blog post: Do you have any Slovenians?
Pets: All dogs must be on a leash at all times at the request of our ship cat Chiclet.
More about the Mediterranean connection: Mediterranean immigrants are a big part of Red Hook's history.
For more on that, see our e-museum Red Hook WaterStories.
We called the musicians’ jam "WaterStories of the Wine Dark Sea” in a nod to the ancient bard Homer. Homer's sea was neither green nor blue, he called it “wine-dark.” The Ancients did not see the sea as the end of the road but as a bridge—as we do at PortSide. Embark with PortSide on a cultural journey around the Mediterranean Sea, its colors and cultures. Share and discover stories, songs, and struggles. Bring an oud, a guitar, or clapping hands. Bring your family histories of Mediterranean immigrants who lived and worked in Red Hook to add to Red Hook WaterStories.
Help make TankerTime! volunteer to staff the deck so we can expand weekend hours.
