The Mary A Whalen will again be the base of operation for the famous sloop Clearwater. There are no public sails today but the sloop will be tied up next to ours during TankerTime (when they are not out sailing: 5:30 - 8:00pm).
TankerTime = enjoy the deck of the tanker MARY A. WHALEN with tables, chairs, hammocks. Kids toy area. Free library in the BookTent with kids books you can take. ArtTable with colored pencils, watercolors, blank paper and coloring book pages. Kiddie pool during hot weather. Experience the inside of the ship in the Tankerman’s cabin with 2 bunk beds (kids can get on them), stuffies and kids books you can read (but not take; we use these for our education programs).
More about the Clearwater from their website “In 1966, folk music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger, in despair over the pollution of his beloved Hudson River, announced plans to “build a boat to save the river.” Seeger, along with many other concerned individuals, believed that a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries would bring people to the river where they could experience its beauty and be moved to preserve it.”
